About BillerudKorsnäs

BillerudKorsnäs is one of the world’s leading suppliers of high-quality, packaging materials made from natural cellulose fibre. Our wood raw material comes from sustainable managed forests and manufacturing takes place at resource-efficient, integrated production units.

Our customers are packaging manufacturers, brand owners and large retail and supermarket chains. Through close collaboration with customers and partners all over the world, we are able to offer a customised and broad product portfolio that features a high degree of innovation. Demand is driven by global megatrends, particularly rising urbanisation, a greater focus on sustainability and changing consumption patterns. Consumer segments, primarily food and beverages, account for most of sales. While Europe is the core market, BillerudKorsnäs is gradually strengthening its presence in the leading growth markets of Asia. Smart packaging solutions using paper or board from BillerudKorsnäs reduce the impact on the climate, cut the use of resources along the whole value chain and contribute to a sustainable future.

Our story

Established in 2012 in Sweden, through the merger of Billerud and Korsnäs, we pride ourselves with experience building on more than 150 years in the forestry and paper industry. Our expertise, ranging from raw material to consumer insights and environmental concerns, is key for unlocking the potential of paper and packaging solutions, and ultimately, to empower brands and businesses. The starting point is the pure, strong, light primary fibre from responsible forestry in the north and our expertise in process and packaging technology, design and logistics.

Our offer is based on three pillars: first-class packaging materials, innovative packaging solutions and a network of like-minded partners, such as brand owners, converters, scientists, entrepreneurs and universities. Our partnerships give us a deep understanding of new opportunities, allowing for innovation and sustainability to drive development along the whole chain from forestry to finished packaging.

We aim to be the natural choice of partner in the packaging industry, leading the development in a positive direction for society and our planet. It’s no small task. But, then again, at BillerudKorsnäs we are always up for a real challenge.

Sustainable Solution Description

We challenge conventional packaging for a sustainable future

The need for packaging is rapidly increasing every year. Most of today’s packaging is made from non-renewable materials, such as plastic, and contribute to more CO2 emissions than global aviation. And only ten percent of this packaging is effectively recycled, the rest is incinerated, ends up as landfill, or even litter.

We want to change this by making packaging material of renewable fibres from responsible sources. Packaging that not only protects food and products so that less go to waste, but also can be recycled and used again.

BillerudKorsnäs is uniquely positioned to drive the transition to a climate-neutral and circular economy based on renewable and recyclable raw material from the forest. But to make this a reality, we need to actively push for change where we can contribute the most. During the coming years, we are therefore focusing our sustainability efforts within the following three areas: Safety first, Climate impact & Materials for the future

All this is made possible by the fact that what we do is based on a sustainable foundation. With our sustainable wood supply, engaging workplaces, resource-efficient production and close relationship with suppliers and customers, we can proudly establish a sustainable and responsible value chain. And with both a local and a global presence, we provide surplus heat to tens of thousands of nearby homes at the same time as we cooperate with non-profit organisations for plastic-free oceans around the world.

We challenge conventional packaging for a sustainable future and we have the know-how, foundation and partnerships to do it. We strive for a future in which we are not dependent on fossil resources, and where sustainable options are no longer the exception, but the natural choice.
